I’ve always thought the best vacation is the one unplanned- no itinerary, no schedule. Free yourself and go where the day takes you. My buddy of 12 years Steph and I took a two-hour road trip from LA to San Diego.
I gambled on PRICELINE.COM and ‘named my own price’ for a 4 star luxury hotel. After inputting a non-refundable $100 bid, and waiting for a few nervous moments wondering my fate, I was given a room at the Downtown Omni Hotel. This was exciting since rooms normally book for $250 in the GasLamp Quarter. We took this to be a good sign for our upcoming adventure, packed our bags and a cooler full of beer & Gatorade, and headed south.
After arriving in San Diego we took a wrong exit and landed in front of ADULT SUPERSTORE- so of course we had to go inside. It was huge and the best adult store I’d ever visited, including every sex toy imaginable, racks and racks of magazines, and hot clothing, t-shirts and jewelry. Upon hearing Steph had never owned a vibrator, I bought her a nifty blue RABBIT model with a rotating head, which the salesgirl promised would do the trick (Steph will not confirm or deny this fact- I doubt she’s even purchased batteries for her new toy). The clerks were really friendly and even allowed us to check out the live theater in back, where we opened the door to a dark smelly room littered with tissues and the sounds of porn and men…ewww. We tried to turn around and run out but neither of us wanted to touch the door handle.
Steph dragged me kicking and screaming to the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum $17.Located on an actual Navy ship from World War II, exhibits range from the crew's sleeping quarters to a massive galley, engine room and several climb-aboard cockpits and aircraft. It was an amazing ship and on a normal day I would have stayed and tested the flight-simulators; but I came to San Diego to party so after an hour I convinced her to leave.
We finally arrived at our hotel, which had an amazing view of Petco Stadium & was in the heart of the GasLamp. This is not the gay area, but has excellent shopping, restaurants & bars so we decided to check it out. After dining on buckets of crab & lobster at Rockin’ Baja $30 per person, we headed for drinks at Dick’s Last Resort, arguably the best bar I’ve ever visited. The waiters are rude & forced us to wear bibs. Best of all they make everyone wear huge ridiculous white paper hats shaped like condoms/penises, with sayings written on them like I Love Dick & Former Underwear Model.
We got sloshed and took a cab to the gay district of Hillcrest in the hopes of finding a lesbian bar. We ended up at Urban Mo’s- 90% gay men. The drinks are pricey but there is no cover charge, and there’s a huge drag queen selling cigarettes and Jell-O shots in big syringes. Being the only girls at a gay bar has its advantages, though, as lots of gay boys chatted us up, told us what’s fun to do in SD, and ultimately groped our boobs.
The next morning we had breakfast at Maryjane’s Coffee Shop at The Hard Rock Hotel. The place was packed and the hostess was rude but my breakfast of Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon was excellent. They are known for their milkshakes and our server made me a custom Kahlua-laced concoction that set me back $13 but was well worth the money.
In the end, the ‘no-plans’ theory worked and even though we didn’t find any cute lesbians, we found adventure nonetheless.
is stripped because it is not allowed here. -->

Although Italy is not necessary known as a premiere lesbian destination, it has its profoundly queer charms in the form of food, art, shopping and its fashionable residents. In fact, you may be content simply having a creamy gelato at a pleasant café while drinking in the sites of sexy, well dressed, olive skinned brunettes whizzing by on their shiny Vespas. Afterwards, you may even want to strike up a conversation with a friendly Italian or do a little shopping for fantastic leathers, comfy loafers or designer ties. After all, it will facilitate blending in with the locals. Surprisingly, we found most Italians will do their best to communicate in English and even tolerate your attempts at speaking their language.
Must have eats are of course the pasta, pizza, and pastry. We reveled in the rigatoni with regional sauces and soft buffalo mozzarella, which is made from either the milk of a cow or yes, a buffalo. Of course if you’re a meat eater, there are plenty of wonderful pork, lamb and beef options. Seafood is also fresh and plentiful. Italians however are not big on turkey or chicken. You can get a pretty good pizza just about anywhere. But the best pizza in Italy by far, in my humble opinion, comes out of Naples. It is typically served without tomato sauce. Instead the thin, flaky crust is brushed with olive oil and fresh garlic, before sliced tomato and other toppings of your choice are added. Try it, you will absolutely love it. Pizza is not usually served by the slice; each gets their own individual pizza pie. Mangia! It is a good idea to remember meals are not to be rushed here, and are in fact, drawn out over a long period of time in order for conversation and relaxation. Be sure you leave some room for the gelato which comes in just about every flavor you can think of from banana to watermelon. You can find pastry just about everywhere and the locals mostly indulge for breakfast with a tiny cup of knock your socks off espresso. Venture into a specialty shop or pasticceria as this is where you will find the most delicate and delicious pastry creations. Caffeine boosts are a well known Italian tradition and are often needed by touristas between all the walking and site seeing in order to keep perky & alert. The cappuccinos are highly recommended and come with a thick head of foam sans the sugar. The espresso really is for die hard coffee drinkers only. No frap, blended coffee-esque type drinks here; coffee in Italy is a serious business.
Roma Strana

Do not get started early in Rome as the Romans definitely don’t. Rome also pretty much takes a two hour nap or siesta in the early afternoon so plan your days accordingly. Do get ready to view plenty of male genitalia, because it hangs to the left, the right & everywhere in between in Rome. For some reason the church loves the male nude body. That aside, the surroundings truly are surreal in that Rome is home to the ancient wonders of the Coliseum, the Forum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, and of course Vatican City. These sites are a must see whether or not you’re a fan of the papacy. Of course if you’re not an art fan either, you may want to skip the Vatican Museums. Our favorites among the lot were the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain. If you don’t want to walk then try a sight seeing bus, they come in every color of the rainbow for easy access with little effort, to all these attractions for a very modest price. There is no lack of queer friendly places in Rome, head to the Coming Out bar at Via San Giovanni in Laterano, 8 Phone: 06.700.9871. This playful space offers both snacks and meals. Scheduled events include drag shows, karaoke & live music as well as Miss Lesbian contests. Coming Out is open from 7.30pm-2.30am. The friendly Oppio Caffè, Via delle Terme di Tito, 72 Phone 06.474.5262, at the Coliseum is a perfect place to take a break and have a snack or a meal while visiting the Monuments. It boasts a wonderful outdoor terrace and is open daily from the early morning.
Venezia Gaio

Venice is truly a place for lovers. Its romance, intrigue and sheer beauty makes it an ideal destination for couples, despite the fact it can be pricey and touristy. The main attractions here are the Bridge of Sighs, and the ancient Palazzos including the grand piazza of San Marco. A simple ride on the city water bus offers a fascinating and adventurous glimpse into the history of this grand city on stilts. Nearly every twist of the grand canal presents a new view to peep at. You may spend your day cruising the canals, dining and shopping as there is not much in the way of other attractions except the Collezione Guggenheim, home to many an art treasure. The shopping is indeed high end and includes many famous Italian designers including Fendi, Armani and Gucci. Or you could always stay in bed and take in the views from your hotel room. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate any lesbain bars in Venice and indeed there is not much in the way of night life. However, there is a queer beach frequented by both women and men at Alberoni on the Lido. From the Vaporetto stop at Lido di Venezia take Bus line B to Alberoni and head through the trees towards the water. The queer section is just to the right of the entrance to the strand. If you would like to find out more about Rome and Venice there are plenty of good websites that can be helpful when planning your lesbian adventures in Italy. You may want to purchase a lesbian travel guide as well. We found the maps, information on the EuroRail and common Italian phrases really come in handy. Arrivederci.

Traveling with your girl is a big step in a relationship. It can either strengthen your bond or tear you apart. Take heed of the advice below.
Study Up

Know what you're getting yourselves into before you get in the car in order to minimize bickering. This means research. Look into expenses, activities, maps, sight seeing, restaurants, and anything else that might interest you. Researching can be fun if you do it together over drinks or dinner before your departure. It will get both of you in the spirit, & will ward off unwanted surprises later on. You just don't want to have to deal with your girlfriend once she discovers that the sole cuisine in most restaurants is beef & pork, and she's vegan.
Compromise
Chances are you both may need to sacrifice a bit of your own desires to please one another while on your trip. If this doesn’t go both ways one of you will feel disappointed or worse. Maybe you want to check out the famous landmarks while she wants to go sip beers of the world at the pub. Well, join her at the pub one day, and the next she can join you on a touring excursion.
Ms. Independence

If there's simply too much to do & not enough time, agree to venture out on your own on a few occasions. Arrange a mutually convenient meeting place & time, and hook up later. Not only does it allow you a bit of space, but you'll also, hopefully, miss each other and have more to talk about when you do rendezvous.
Madame Butterfly
Flutter around & be social so you can meet other people or couples. It’ll broaden your horizons and give you others to talk to and do things with.
