Not exactly chick flicks, these films feature strong females who resemble women you want to know. They are role-models for new ways of living & breaking through barriers. These flicks are thought-provoking, not merely brain-numbing dribble. They exhibit real female friendship & don’t necessarily end happily ever after. Perfect for a low key date on the couch. Cuddle up girls!

1. Thelma & Louise
The queen of all femme flicks. Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis star as accidental outlaws on a desperate flight across the Southwest after a tragic incident at a roadside bar. With a determined detective trailing them, a sweet-talking hitchhiker in their path & a string of crimes in their wake, their journey alternates between hilarious, thrill ride & an empowering personal odyssey. It provoked great debate on crime as a response to abuse.

2. Amélie
The bashful & impish title character is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people. Her widowed father yearns to travel but won't, so she sends his garden gnome on a tour of the world. She brings together two cranky regulars at her café. She reverses the doorknobs & reprograms the speed dial of a grocer who's mean to his assistant. Gradually she realizes her own life needs some work, & a chance meeting leads to her most elaborate ruse of all. But will she have the courage to do for herself what she has done for others? This is a wonderful movie with a revealing mix of magic & pragmatism.

3. The Color Purple
Based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, this is a richly-textured, powerful film set in America's rural south. Whoopi Goldberg plays the radiant, indomitable Celie, the story's main character. Her impressive portrayal is complimented by a distinguished cast that includes Oprah Winfrey. The central theme is one of women triumphing over adversity. It is an exquisitely crafted, landmark film that has been treasured & talked about for years.

4. Aliens
Aliens is a rare case of a sequel that far surpasses the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knew is dead. She is convinced into traveling to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. This is an intensely exciting & frightening action film, with a large ensemble cast. Weaver defines the role of an action woman in this film. She has little time for romance as she straps on two guns and fights the alien queen.

5. Erin Brockovich
Julia Roberts stars as a feisty young mother fighting for justice any way she knows how. Desperate for a job to support herself & her three children, she convinces an attorney to hire her, & promptly stumbles upon a monumental law case against a powerful adversary. Erin is determined to take on this giant corporation even though no law firm has dared before. The two begin an incredible & sometimes hilarious fight that will bring a small town to its feet & a huge company to its knees. Julia almost makes up for Pretty Woman by showing what a single mom can accomplish albeit by showing some flesh. A real woman, real story, & a real triumph.
